Several years ago, we set about trying to overcome the apomixis in the tetraploid Hosta ventricosa. After trying virtually all known species, we were successful in crossing Hosta ventricosa 'Aureomarginata' x Hosta yingeri. All of the offspring were intermediate between the two parents. In theory, this result is not possible, but the secret is not to let your hostas read books. We selected the best of these to introduce for those interested in breeding and hosta genetics. The attractive 15" tall x 40" wide vigorous clumps are composed of rich green leaves, topped in late July with 30" spikes of dark, spider-like flowers. We will not tissue culture this introduction.
