Sun to Part SunZone: 7b-10, at least 144" tall Origin: China
(aka: Bauhinia CY T 279) We originally got this from China under the name B. bohniana. Without a complete Flora of China treatment, we cannot confirm this identity. We do know that this has been winter hardy in our garden for 4 years. The deciduous species emerges in late spring, producing long willowy branches to 12'-14' long. Each branch produces short tendrils designed for climbing, so a trellis or nearby woody plant would make a great display background. Starting in late August, the branches are adorned with 1.5" wide pale pink orchid-like flowers, each highlighted by a purple central streak. This is one of only two bauhinia species that we have found to be hardy to single digit F temperatures. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml)
