And now, for something completely different...to borrow a Monty Python line. This is probably the first offering of the rare bigeneric cross of Zephyranthes 'Labuffarosea' x Habranthus robustus. Z. 'Norma Pearl' was created by rain lily guru Paul Niemi and named after his mother. The fast-multiplying bulbs form a robust clump of thick grey-green leaves, topped throughout most of the summer by 3" wide, nearly pure white flowers that are intermediate between both parents. Zephyranthes (Rain Lily)
We are fascinated with the wonderful group of zephyranthes(rain lilies). Rain lilies are unobtrusive summer-flowering small bulbs that can fit in virtually any landscape. The flower range is from yellow to white to pink. The great thing about rain lilies is the lack of large foliage that accompanies many of the spring-flowering bulbs. There are rain lilies that grow in conditions from bogs to deserts, with most having an incredible tolerance to heat. We were pleased that our butterflies find these a wonderful nectar source in the summer months. We are very pleased to continue expanding our rain lily selection with many of the hard-to-find Mexican species, many older US hybrids, and the groundbreaking new work from Fadjar Marta of Indonesia. |

This fabulous Thad Howard hybrid of Z. 'Ruth Page' x Z. pulchella is one of the most unique rain lilies we grow. The glossy green foliage is topped, starting in late summer, with 6" tall spikes of 1.5" - 2" rounded flowers that open the first day as a lovely peachy apricot. (aka: Z. FM #76) This very floriferous stunner from the rain lily breeding program of Indonesia's Fadjar Marta is a true breeding breakthrough. The flower buds atop the 6" stalks are yellow flushed with pink veins. Upon opening, the 3" wide bicolor flowers are lemon yellow with a dark pink edge...simply a sight to behold. Our original bulb was purchased from the Bangkok market by plantsman Alan Galloway. We first thought it was the old hybrid Z. 'Ajax', but this clone differed slightly in color from the Z. 'Ajax' in our reference collection; hence, we use the moniker 'Bangkok Yellow'. This is almost certainly another hybrid of Z. citrina x Z. candida because of the typical short, round, upright green leaves of Z. candida. When it begins flowering in late summer, the clumps are topped with Z. candida-sized flowers that open a nice yellow and change to a lighter yellow the second day. Each petal is highlighted with a suffuse yellow stripe down the center...quite nice! When summer showers are plentiful, we get good rebloom all summer...rain not included. Zephyranthes 'Big Dude' is one of our selections from the seed strain Z. 'Labuffarosea'. We were looking for a selection with large flowers and a fast-multiplying habit, and this is the result. Each flower can reach an amazing 4" in width. The large, white petals are tipped with a faint blush of pink on the tips. This easy-to-grow rain lily is amazing when the entire clump bursts into flower after a rain. For us, flowering starts in early summer and continues until frost. This wonderful, semi-evergreen rain lily just can't be beaten for an easy-to-grow garden performer. The round, narrow, dark green foliage makes a thick clump. Beginning in summer, 1" tall, pure white, star-like flowers with dramatic golden stamens (pollen holders) arise just above the foliage. Z. candida makes a great specimen clump but, when used in a mass or for a border, it is simply indescribable! Although quite durable, Z. candida performs best in a rich or very moist site. (aka: Z. sulphurea) This native to the Yucatan Peninsula is another of the commonly seen rain lilies in Deep South gardens, especially around TX. This tough rain lily tolerates truly crappy soils, floods, droughts, and just about anything nature can throw its way. The very narrow, grass-like foliage is topped with 8-10" tall stems of small, bright yellow, goblet-shaped flowers from midsummer, although best flowering for us occurs from the late summer months to early fall. This new clone is a Yucca Do selection from the Z. 'Labuffarosea' seed strain. Z. 'Confection' boasts flowers that are so large the petals actually weep like the ears of a wet dog...without the accompanying smell. The center of each flower is pure white, changing to pink about halfway down the pendent petals...a very unique form. Flowering begins in midsummer and continues until frost...after each rain event. This lovely rain lily was discovered by our friends at Yucca Do Nursery in 1996 in Tamaulipas, Mexico, growing near Z. clintae and Z. traubii. FM #12) This vigorous rain lily from Indonesia's Fadjar Marta is topped, starting in mid-June, with clusters of 6" flower stalks, each topped with a 2" copper-orange (RHS 167C) flower, highlighted with a bright yellow throat. It's hard to find words to fit the work of Indonesia's Fadjar Marta, who was awarded the prestigious 2007 Herbert Medal from the International Bulb Society. Z. 'Fantasy Island' is topped starting in late July with large 3" wide flowers. Each white petal is edged in pink, creating a stunning new effect. It's just hard to get enough of these new rain lilies. (Often incorrectly listed as Z. rosea) This wonderful rain lily has 8" long, flat, glossy, green foliage that quickly forms a nice 1' wide clump. All summer, the clump is topped with 12" tall stalks of giant, libido-awakening, 3"+ rose-pink flowers (RHS 75B). A clump can have up to 20 flowers open at once...absolutely spectacular. Z. 'Grandjax' is truly one of the great rain lily hybrids of all times. From Ray Flagg comes this cross of Z. grandiflora and the creamy hybrid Z. 'Ajax'. This fast-multiplying rain lily quickly makes a tight clump that is topped, from summer through early fall, with dozens (eventually hundreds) of large, creamy-pink flowers with white stars in the center...superb!!! FM #01) This new floriferous rain lily from Fadjar Marta's breeding erupts into flower starting in mid-July and continuing all summer with 10" tall spikes, ending in a 2" wide cupped flower of bright reddish-orange.
