Bambusa multiplex 'Alphonse Karr' (Alphonse Karr Clumping Bamboo)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 7b-10 240" tall Origin: China
NEW!
We simply adore this stunning clumping bamboo that makes an 18' tall clump (35' in more tropical areas) of 1" diameter canes, vertically striped gold and green. We have observed slight foliage burn at 10 degrees F and some cane dieback at 8 degrees F. While we also have had clumps die to the ground at 0 degrees F, they have always resprouted nicely when summer warmth arrived, although it takes a few years to recover their full size. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #02124

Bambusa multiplex 'Fernleaf' (Fernleaf Clumping Bamboo)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 7b-10 120" tall Origin: China
Web-Only!
(syn: B. glaucescens 'Fernleaf') This compact cultivar of the clumping Bamboo multiplex usually reaches 9-10', although reports exist of 20' heights in perfect conditions. The 1/2" wide upright green canes are composed of culms every 4-6". From these culms, tufts of small stems emerge bearing densely packed, small green leaves. Because of its thick nature, B. 'Fernleaf' is highly prized as a short, thick hedge. When temperatures drop below 6 degrees F, the plants will probably defoliate, and the canes will die to the ground at 0 degrees F. Our plants have reliably resprouted from 0 degrees several times over the last 20 years. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #01829

Bambusa multiplex 'Riviereorum' (Clumping Bamboo With Too Many Vowels)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 7b-10 120" tall Origin: China
No muss, no fuss, no trouble! We have long experimented with this heat-loving clumping bamboo and still find it strangely underused in southeastern gardens. This 10' clumper dies to the ground at 10 degrees F, but returns late the next summer when the heat builds. We grow it as we would an ornamental grass and cut it to the ground in early spring. When winter temperatures stay between 15-20 degrees F, the stems will remain green and the leaves evergreen. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #02123

Baptisia (Wild Indigo)
Baptisias have long been one of our favorite groups of plants, rivaling the famed lupine for beauty and structure, but being far easier to grow and maintain. Baptisias are ornamental members of the pea family, most with blue-green foliage, topped by magnificent stalks of flowers in early spring. We are pleased to present a wide selection of the best species, as well as some of the most amazing hybrids that you'll ever see. Baptisias hail from drier parts of the country — perfect for xeriscaping. |
Baptisia alba var. alba 'Wayne's World' (Wayne's World Redneck Lupine)
Sun Zone: 4-8, at least 48" tall Origin: USA    alternate image
We are pleased to introduce this superb, vegetatively propagated clone of our native B. alba that we selected from seed from a population in nearby Wayne County, NC. B. 'Wayne's World' is a vigorously growing selection that forms a full-figured upright clump to 4' tall. In spring, the 3' wide emerging clumps are topped with dramatic 18" spikes of white...very dramatic! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05411

Baptisia arachnifera - NOT OUTSIDE NC (Wooly Wild Indigo)
Sun Zone: 6-10, possibly colder 18" tall Origin: USA    alternate image
Web-Only!
This is the finest of all baptisias for the rock garden. Each small, 18" tall x 18" wide clump is adorned with clasping silvery eucalyptus-like hairy leaves. B. arachnifera is a compact grower for a special spot in the rock garden and is topped with small yellow flowers in the leaf axils in late summer...after all other baptisias have finished. Unbelievable! It is also late to emerge, so don't get worried when it's not the first thing out of the ground. This federally endangered coastal native of GA cannot be shipped outside of NC. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #00510

Baptisia australis (Wild Blue Redneck Lupine)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 3-9 36" tall Origin: USA
This easy-to-grow, drought-tolerant US native is always a perennial favorite (pardon the pun) for the border or the wild garden. This native has upright stems clothed with peanut-like, trifoliate (three-lobed), blue-green waxy foliage on a clump that can easily cover an area 3' wide. In early spring before the clump bulks up, the awesome blue lupine-like flower racemes are held atop the foliage. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #01182

Baptisia 'Carolina Moonlight' (Carolina Moonlight Redneck Lupine)
Sun Zone: 4-9 53" tall Origin: USA Hybrid    alternate image
We are thrilled to be able to offer this new introduction from Rob Gardner at the NC Botanical Garden. It is a sister to the popular Baptisia 'Purple Smoke'. This cross of B. sphaerocarpa x B. alba makes a vigorous, easy-to-grow, 3' wide garden specimen of blue-green foliage. B. 'Carolina Moonlight' is topped in late spring with stunning 18" spikes of soft buttery-yellow. This great lupine substitute is long-lived, heat-loving, and drought tolerant...you can't say the same for true lupines! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #04218

Baptisia leucophaea 'Butterball' (Butterball Redneck Lupine)
Sun Zone: 5-9, at least 18" tall Origin: USA
NEW!
New crop available 8-7-2008 We grow lots of baptisia seed each year and one of our B. leucophaea seedlings stood out from all the rest after years of trials. The early-emerging B. 'Butterball' makes a compact 18" tall x 2' wide clump of glaucous foliage, adorned with obscenely large and floriferous pendulous spikes of creamy yellow flowers, starting in early April (in NC). Baptisia leucophaea cuttings aren't the easiest things to root, so the supply of plants is very limited. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #07206

Baptisia 'Purple Smoke' (Purple Smoke Redneck Lupine)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 3-9 50" tall Origin: USA Hybrid
This 1996 introduction by curator Rob Gardner of the NC Botanical Garden was selected from rows of B. minor var. aberrans seedlings. Obviously, some unsafe plant sex had taken place with a wandering Baptisia alba. The result is an extremely vigorous baptisia with charcoal-green stems (when mature) and dozens of giant lupine-like flower heads of dusty purple. You will grow to love this outstanding introduction more with each year as the clump matures...SUPERB! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #02190

Baptisia simplicifolia coll. #A1FL-069 (Simple Leaf Baptisia)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 5-9 20" tall Origin: USA
Web-Only!
This strange Florida Panhandle endemic looks nothing like a baptisia. The thick, glossy-green, eucalyptus-like leaves adorn the 20" tall x 2' wide clump. Strangely, it doesn't emerge from dormancy until late June or early July (late risers are common in FL). B. simplicifolia finally reveals its true identity in late-July when the clumps are topped with short spikes of bright yellow flowers. This is a 'must-have' for fooling know-it-all garden visitors. These are grown from both cuttings and seed from an original cutting-grown plant we collected from the home of the hanging chads, Leon County, FL. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05968

Baptisia sphaerocarpa Hunt Co. Texas (Yellow Redneck Lupine)
Sun Zone: 5-9, at least 30" tall Origin: USA
This has long been our favorite of the baptisia species, but it requires an expedition to TX to get pure seed. Thanks to TX native Jimmy Turner for saving us the trip. This collection from Hunt County, TX, has rounded blue-green leaves adorning 30" tall x 36" wide clumps. In mid to late April, the clumps are topped with stupendous 12" tall spires of pure yellow flowers, followed in late summer by curious spherical tan seedpods. You will love this heat- and drought-tolerant US native in your perennial border! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05672

Baptisia sphaerocarpa 'Screamin' Yellow' (Screamin' Yellow Redneck Lupine)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 5-9, at least 36" tall Origin: USA
New crop available 7-31-2008 Baptisia 'Screamin' Yellow' is a selection of B. sphaerocarpa from native plant guru Larry Lowman. Compared to our TX and OK collections, the leaves on this AK selection are slightly larger and more yellow-green. In our gardens, B. 'Screamin' Yellow' makes a 3' tall x 5' wide clump, topped in late April/early May with stunning 11" spikes of bright yellow flowers. For a drought-tolerant perennial and a great spring show, it don't get no better than this. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05405

Bauhinia bohniana (Climbing Chinese Orchid Tree)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 7b-10, at least 144" tall Origin: China
NEW!
(aka: Bauhinia CY T 279) We originally got this from China under the name B. bohniana. Without a complete Flora of China treatment, we cannot confirm this identity. We do know that this has been winter hardy in our garden for 4 years. The deciduous species emerges in late spring, producing long willowy branches to 12'-14' long. Each branch produces short tendrils designed for climbing, so a trellis or nearby woody plant would make a great display background. Starting in late August, the branches are adorned with 1.5" wide pale pink orchid-like flowers, each highlighted by a purple central streak. This is one of only two bauhinia species that we have found to be hardy to single digit F temperatures. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #06944
