Calamagrostis (Reed Grass)
This genus, comprising 200+ species of temperate grasses, is well represented in horticulture by two primary species, C. brachytricha and C. acutiflora. They are renowned around the world as one of the top genera of ornamental grasses in a wide range of climates. We are pleased to offer a good selection of this easy-to-grow grass.
Calamagrostis acutiflora 'Eldorado' PP 16,486 (Eldorado Feather Reed Grass)

Calamagrostis acutiflora 'Eldorado' PP 16,486 (Eldorado Feather Reed Grass)

Sun to Part SunZone: 4-7 48" tall Origin: Asia Minor
Web-Only! From Todd and Lisa Kowitz of Garden Gate Growers in Kettle Falls, WA, comes this new addition to the line of wonderful feather reed grass cultivars. C. 'Eldorado' was first discovered at Garden Gate in 2000 and was recognized as special because of the gold central variegation which was unique to the leaves of C. 'Karl Foerster'. The upright clumps are composed of narrow green leaves, centrally striped gold, topped in late summer with very narrow, vertical plumes to 4' tall...architecturally stunning! Pot size: 2 qt. (1.892 L) #06758

Calamagrostis brachytricha (Achy Breaky Heart Grass)

Calamagrostis brachytricha (Achy Breaky Heart Grass)

Sun to Light ShadeZone: 5-9a 24" tall Origin: Korea
Web-Only! C. brachytricha (pronounced "breaky-tryka") forms an attractive tidy clump, 2' tall x 2' wide. In September, dozens of 2' tall, refined-looking pink plumes top this shade lover. The pink color gives way to a bronze tone that remains through the fall. Visitors who see this in flower can't leave without one. This calamagrostis tolerates hot summers and shady conditions much better than C. acutiflora. Feather reed grass is an awesome accent plant or great for dried arrangements...one of the best but least-known! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #00011

Calamintha
Calamintha nepeta var. nepeta (Lesser Calamint)

Calamintha nepeta var. nepeta (Lesser Calamint)

SunZone: 5-8a, at least 20" tall Origin: S. Europe
Web-Only! I hadn't been as impressed in quite a while as I was when I first met this plant in Dale Hendricks' PA garden. The bushy mound of light green foliage, reeking of peppermint, was smothered in clouds of tiny, very light blue flowers. Our plants here in hot, muggy NC have performed equally as well, in full flower from June until October. Calamintha needs good drainage and plenty of air circulation, although this one has survived far better than other calaminthas for us. I think rock gardeners and herb lovers alike will fall in love with this gem...for me, it was love at first sight (don't tell Michelle)! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #03501

Calanthe (Hardy Orchid)
Few plants will tolerate very dark dry shade as well as the hardy calanthe orchids. Unlike many temperamental orchids, calanthes are very easy to grow and multiply into very large clumps. The magnificent flowers often boast a clove-like fragrance. Expect a 3-year wait for them to make a large enough clump to put on a dazzling show.
Calanthe aristulifera (Hardy Calanthe Orchid)

Calanthe aristulifera (Hardy Calanthe Orchid)

Light Shade to ShadeZone: 7-9 15" tall Origin: Japan
Web-Only! Calanthe aristulifera is one of the rarest of the Japanese endemic species, from the mountains of Japan's Kyushu island. C. aristulifera forms an 18" wide clump of pleated, evergreen leaves, topped in midspring with 15" tall flower spikes, lined with small light pink flowers. We find a slightly moist organic rich soil is best, although these are extraordinarily drought tolerant. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #06946

Calanthe Hizen Hybrids (Hardy Calanthe Orchid)

Calanthe Hizen Hybrids (Hardy Calanthe Orchid)

Light ShadeZone: 7-9 12" tall Origin: Hybrid
Web-Only! This new series of hardy orchid hybrids from Japan (Calanthe discolor x C. aristulifera) form basal rosettes of heavily pleated olive-green leaves. The 8" flower spike emerges in early spring and contains up to a dozen flowers, each creamy-to-light pink with a darker pink/purple lip. Each seedling is different, so the color may vary slightly. Calanthes are superb for very dark spots in the woodland garden. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #06174

Calanthe sieboldii (Hardy Orchid)

Calanthe sieboldii (Hardy Orchid)

Light Shade to ShadeZone: 7-9, possibly colder 15" tall Origin: Japan
(syn: C. striata) This hard-to-find Japanese native terrestrial orchid has been a superb performer and one of our favorite calanthes. The evergreen foliage (except below 10 degrees F) composes a vigorous 15" tall x 15" wide clump of deeply pleated leaves. In spring, the bloom stalks rise from the ground to reach 15". Along the scape are dozens of small pansy-like flowers of bright yellow...quite stunning. Calanthes prefer well-drained, slightly moist woodland conditions and are proven to be quite easy to grow. After severe winters, they may be very late to emerge. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #01861

Callirhoe involucrata (Wine Cups)

Sun to Part SunZone: 4-9 6" tall Origin: USA
Web-Only! This vertically challenged hibiscus relative from the midwest and southwest US is truly a distinctive addition to the garden. It begins in the spring with the 2" round cutleaf foliage emerging from a basal clump. The stems spread out horizontally to 3', then in late spring, are smothered with 1-2" wide flowers resembling cups of red wine...both in size, color, and shape. Wine cups are great for the front of the border, or cascading down a wall. If you are going to fall off the horticultural wagon, you might as well do it with a wine cup in your hand! Calydorea
Calydorea coelestina (Bartram's Ixia)

Calydorea coelestina (Bartram's Ixia)

Sun to Part SunZone: 7-10, at least 6" tall Origin: USA
Web-Only! (syn: Sphenostigma coelestinum) This truly amazing irid is a rare and threatened endemic to a small region in northeastern FL. The 6" long, green-pleated, iris-like leaves form a small clump. Starting in early summer and continuing into late summer, the clumps are topped with 6" stalks, ending in a huge, 2" deep violet flower. Each flower only remains open until noon, so plant this in a special place where it can be enjoyed early in the day. Although native to bogs and grassy pinelands, we have found this to be extraordinarily easy to grow in a container or in a wide range of garden conditions. We are delighted to offer plants grown from seed of our garden plants. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05020

Campanula (Bellflower)
This wide-ranging genus of plants contains everything from rare, difficult-to-grow wimps to vicious thugs, with only a few in-between. Over the years, we have killed several and discarded others, but along the way we found some real gems for the garden, which we present below. We hope you enjoy these as much as we do.
Campanula poscharskyana 'Camgood' PP 13,161 (Blue Waterfall Serbian Bellflower)

Campanula poscharskyana 'Camgood' PP 13,161 (Blue Waterfall Serbian Bellflower)

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 4-7 8" tall Origin: Balkans
(aka: C. 'Blue Waterfall') Got dry shade? We've got a plant for you! This Blooms of Bressingham introduction makes a weed-smothering mat of creeping stems and small dark green leaves, which are topped from May-August with small star-shaped, lavender-blue flowers. Although C. 'Camgood' prefers slightly moist soils and part sun, we have found its tolerance for dry shade to be nothing short of amazing. Compared to the straight species, C. 'Camgood' makes a tidier mat with darker green leaves. In 3 years, you should expect a 4' wide mat of flowers. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08037

Campanula 'Samantha' (Samantha Bellflower)

Campanula 'Samantha' (Samantha Bellflower)

Sun to Part SunZone: 5-7, at least 6" tall Origin: Hybrid
We trialed this dwarf rock garden-sized Campanula carpatica hybrid, knowing our heat and humidity would kill it in three notes...I mean weeks. Instead, Campanula 'Samantha' began flowering in June and continued steadily through July, with a few scattered flowers later in the summer. The small, tight, 3" tall x 15" wide clumps of tiny round green leaves are topped with masses of 6" spikes of 1" blue-purple upfacing flowers. If you're out in the garden crawling around on your knees or trying to upright yourself after a drunken spill, you'll enjoy the delightfully fragrant flowers. C. 'Samantha' was named by Diana Reeck of Collectors Nursery after her granddaughter. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08055

Campanula 'Sarastro' (Sarastro Bellflower)

Campanula 'Sarastro' (Sarastro Bellflower)

Sun to Light ShadeZone: 5-8, at least 18" tall Origin: Hybrid    alternate image
Web-Only! From Austria's Sarastro Nursery comes this superb, new bellflower hybrid between two heat-loving species (C. punctata x trachelium). The slowly spreading habit, compared to the thuggish C. punctata, makes this a far better choice for most home gardens. Starting in late spring, the clumps are topped with 18" flower spikes of very dark purple pendent bells. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05547

Campanula 'Summertime Blues' PPAF, PVR (Summertime Blues Bellflower)

Campanula 'Summertime Blues' PPAF, PVR (Summertime Blues Bellflower)

Sun to Part SunZone: 4-8, at least 24" tall Origin: Hybrid
This 2006 Terra Nova introduction is an improvement over the wonderful Campanula 'Kent Belle' created by crossing the running Campanula punctata with the equally rambunctious C. trachelium. This result was a non-spreading (go figure) bellflower which makes an 2' tall x 18" wide clump topped, starting in late spring and re-flowering through the summer with 2' tall stalks of blue-lavender nodding bells...very cute and perfect for blending into some great border combinations. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08056
