Echeandia chandleri coll. #A1M-66 (Shooting Star Lily)

Sun to Part SunZone: 7b-9, at least 48" tall Origin: Mexico    alternate image
Web-Only! This delightful lily relative is from our 1994 Mexican expedition, collected at 2400' in elevation in the Sierra Chiquita Mountains. The 1' long x 1" wide basal foliage resembles a spider plant. In August, a spike begins to rise from the basal rosette, topping out in October at 4' tall. Along the top 3' of the stalk hang delightful, golden-yellow, dodecatheon-like, star-shaped flowers. For over a decade, this has been a star in our fall garden. We have been surprised how well it has performed in light shade/part sun. The key seems to be well-drained soil. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #03737

Echinacea (Coneflower)
The resurgence in the popularity of this genus of US natives has strangely coincided with the study into the use as part of the edible landscape...of course, for medicinal purposes only. We value them as great plants for late spring and summer interest in the natural garden as well as the mixed perennial border. As a group, these are quite easy to grow as well as being very heat- and drought-tolerant. We hope you are as excited as we are about the new hybrids that greatly extend the color range.

SunZone: 3-8 24" tall Origin: USA
NEW! From the UK's Anthony Brooks, gardener at Elton Hall, comes Echinacea 'Elton Knight', the newest in the current coneflower procession. E. 'Elton Knight' was one of only three coneflowers to receive the prestigious Award of Garden Merit in the Royal Horticultural Echinacea trials (2003). In our trials, E. 'Elton Knight' stands apart not for its color, which is typical pinkish lavender, but for its sturdy 2' tall compact architectural habit and great branching. The flower stalks are topped in summer with 5" wide flower heads of nice outwardly held petals. E. 'Elton Knight' is named for Thomas Andrew Knight, a founding member of the Royal Horticultural Society. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08050

Web-Only! (syn: E. CBG Cone3) This dazzling new coneflower from the breakthrough breeding work of Dr. Jim Ault of the Chicago Botanic Garden opens up yet another color in echinaceas. E. 'Mango Meadowbrite' is topped with 3" wide, mango-colored (RHS 21A), fragrant flower heads surrounding a slightly darker orange central cone. Actually, the color is closer to orange-mustard, but that doesn't sound quite as appealing. This is a stunning plant in flower that is sure to stand out in the garden. It was named E. 'CBG Cone3', which is an invalid cultivar name, so we renamed it E. 'Mango Meadowbrite'. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05881

The result is a charming 18" tall x 2' wide compact clump, composed of sturdy flowering stems that end in mid-sized, flat-petaled pink flowers that rebloom all summer...a real winner! Growing to only 10' tall in temperate climates (20' tall in tropical areas), Ensete maurelii makes a superb ornamental for the summer border. Each leaf can reach gigantic proportions of 10' long. The most ornamental characteristic is that the foliage is flushed with burgundy-red, especially concentrated as the new growth emerges. The higher the light levels, the stronger the coloration. We have also seen this used in large summer containers with great effect. Pot size: 2 qt. (1.892 L) #04790
