Hosta (Hosta)
These natives, mostly to prairies (some in woods) of China, Japan, and Korea, have been grown in America for over 150 years. Currently, there are nearly 5,000 cultivars available in the trade. Of these, probably 500 actually are distinct and garden-worthy. During the last few years, the quality and quantity of new hosta introductions has risen substantially. We continually work with the country's best breeders to evaluate new introductions, and we choose to sell only those that we feel represent the very best. For the best performance, hostas prefer light shade to a couple of hours of sun in the morning. The further south you move, the more moisture will be required to grow the size hostas that are prevalent in the North. Good soil preparation is also a key to growing a hosta well. Our plants are all container-grown and are usually multiple-division plants...our price is for the entire container of 1-20 divisions. We do not offer small, recently propagated plants and challenge other nurserymen to do the same. We know that you will be pleased with our quality; we hope that you will also be pleased with our selection and prices. When hostas are divided under nursery conditions, they often take on immature leaf characteristics including more pointed leaves as well as reduced cupping and corrugation. These leaf forms that are pictured and described will re-develop in one to two growing seasons...don’t be alarmed. |

Light Shade Zone: 3-8 16" tall Origin: USA Hybrid
From the hosta wild man, Chuck Purtymun, comes this still hard-to-find gem. H.'Abiqua Drinking Gourd' (H. 'Tokudama' x H. sieboldiana) has round, cardboard-like, deeply-cupped, powder-blue leaves on a 2' wide clump. In early summer, the clumps are topped with white flowers. Part Sun to Light Shade Zone: 3-8 24" tall Origin: Hybrid
Web-Only!
This stunning mutation of H. 'Gold Regal' has been one of the most sought-after hostas since its introduction in 1989. Gardeners who were lucky enough to secure a piece were hesitant to share. Just like its parent, H. 'Alex Summers' makes a nearly perfect, upright, 3' wide clump of dark green leaves with a contrasting, wide golden border. In July in NC, the clumps are topped by sturdy, attractive flower scapes of lavender. Yes, this is named after our friend and one of the founding members of the American Hosta Society. Hosta 'American Halo' (V. Wade 99)
Light Shade Zone: 3-8 22" tall Origin: Hybrid
Web-Only!
(aka: H. 'Northern Halo' Wade Form) When H. 'Northern Halo' (a cream-edged H. sieboldiana) was first tissue-cultured, many different mutations occurred. Growers such as Ohio's Van Wade collected them all and then selected the best to name and propagate. That resulting plant was named H. 'American Halo'. This stunning selection forms a 22" tall x 6' wide clump of corrugated blue-green leaves surrounded by a wide, creamy border. The slow-growing clump is adorned with 20" spikes, topped with pure white flowers in late spring...a great specimen. Pot size: 3 qt. (2.83 L) #07232

Hosta 'Applause' (H. Hansen 06)
Part Sun to Light Shade Zone: 3-8, at least 28" tall Origin: Hybrid
NEW!
This amazing sport of Hosta 'Edge of Night' is a clump that I couldn't take my eyes off in the garden of Minnesota's Hans Hansen. The heavily-cupped and corrugated dark green leaves with a wide creamy white border are turned upwards instead of laying horizontally, forming a 28" tall x 55" wide clump that resembles hands clapping; hence, the name. A mature clump of Hosta 'Applause' ranks right up with H. 'Praying Hands' in the unusual category. Pot size: 2 qt. (1.892 L) #07589

Hosta 'Bridegroom' (H. Benedict, H. Gowen 90)
Light Shade Zone: 3-9 10" tall Origin: Hybrid

This is one of the truly unique selections in the history of hosta breeding. Herb Benedict's hybrid (H. 'Holly's Honey' x self) has green H. ventricosa-like leaves that fold up like a boat sail near the tip with a twist near the end. Herb named the plant for this leaf characteristic which reminded him of a groom on his wedding night...I'm not making this up! These bizarre leaves adorn the 15" diameter clump. The large (H. ventricosa-like), sterile purple flowers appear in midsummer. Pot size: 2 qt. (1.892 L) #01654
