Polygonatum (Solomon's Seal)
Solomon’s seal are delightful plants for the woodland garden. Their bold foliage adds a unique texture in the garden. Solomon’s seal will slowly colonize, which is when they begin to show their true beauty. While they prefer rich soil, they are also very tolerant of adverse conditions. When Solomon’s seal are divided after they emerge in spring, they will not produce any new growth until the following spring...thought you’d like to know.

Polygonatum hirtum Dwarf Form (Solomon's Seal)

Polygonatum hirtum Dwarf Form (Solomon's Seal)

Part Sun to ShadeZone: 5-9 10" tall Origin: Caucasus    alternate image
Web-Only! I'm disappointed in y'all. After 7 years of growing and propagating this great Solomon's seal and finally having enough to offer last year, virtually no one bought any! I am truly disappointed, but I'm giving you one more chance before I plant it in our own garden. I first picked up this superb Solomon's seal from the former Washfield Nursery and have since enjoyed it in our garden. Adorning the arching stems is typical Solomon's seal foliage that is particularly wide and shiny green. The arching, 10" tall stems are adorned in late April (in NC) with attractive lily-of-the-valley like flowers. P. hirtum is very easy to grow and spreads nicely via thick rhizomes, making a 4' wide patch in 5 years. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #03372

Polygonatum inflatum 'Cheju Giant' (Cheju Giant Solomon's Seal)

Polygonatum inflatum 'Cheju Giant' (Cheju Giant Solomon's Seal)

Light Shade to ShadeZone: 5-9, at least 24" tall Origin: Korea
Web-Only! (aka: P. inflatum A1K-204) Polygonatum 'Cheju Giant' is another unique Solomon's seal, selected on Korea's magical Cheju Island. This particular selection of the Korean P. inflatum is much more robust than typical, forming a clump of 2'+ long stems. The bottom 1' of the stem is upright and bare, while the top 1' arches at a 90 degree angle and is adorned with large, 5" long x 3" wide, exquisitely pleated green leaves. The dangling green flowers are held below the leaves (often solitary) and encased in oversized green bracts. In fall, large blue-black berries replace the faded flowers. This is an extraordinarily beautiful woodland foliage plant. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05987

Polygonatum kingianum Orange Flower Form (Solomon's Seal)

Polygonatum kingianum Orange Flower Form (Solomon's Seal)

Light ShadeZone: 6-9, guessing 60" tall Origin: China
In my wildest dreams (and I do have some pretty wild dreams), I never thought I'd see anything like the rare orange-flowered form of Polygonatum kingianum. Forget everything you know about Solomon's seal, except that it grows from a rhizome in shade. In spring, the stalk emerges, clothed with whorled sets of narrow, dark green foliage. Each leaf ends in a curled loop that it uses to climb above its neighbors...the original social climber. At each whorl of foliage are small, bright-orange, bell-like flowers that make for a tongue-dropping show. This easy-to-grow clumper gets larger and taller as the size of the rhizome increases with age. For us, P. kingianum stands erect unless it sets a good crop of large green berries. This is an absolute gem for the woodland garden...get them while they last. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #03349

In spring, the tight clusters of stems emerge from winter-dormant, knobby rhizomes and are adorned in May with a long rows of small, white, clustered bells, attached just below the stem. Polygonatum odoratum 'Spiral Staircase' (Spiral Staircase Solomon's Seal)

Part Sun to ShadeZone: 5-9, at least 24" tall Origin: Korea    alternate image
We are very pleased to release our unique form of Solomon's seal that was discovered in 1997 on Korea's Cheju Island. The leaves are abnormally large for P. odoratum and are borne very close together compared to typical plants. Finally, the stems twist slightly, creating the effect of a spiral staircase. A clump of P. 'Spiral Staircase' is stunning in leaf as well as when it is adorned in early spring with clusters of small white bell-shaped flowers hanging just below the foliage. In fall, the flowers are replaced by large, blue-black berries. This is a great new vigorous addition to the woodland garden. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05831

Polygonatum odoratum 'Variegatum' (Striped Solomon's Seal)

Part Sun to ShadeZone: 4-9 20" tall Origin: Asia
Emanating from a thumb-sized horizontal rhizome just below the ground in spring, the delicate pink buds emerge, soon evolving into a 20" ladder of green and white leaves. In May, the small white flowers dangle (or is it dingle?) beneath the arching stems. The plants look great from spring until they go dormant in fall. This is one of the finest and easiest-to-grow shade perennials anywhere! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #00895

Polygonum (Knotweed)
This genus of buckwheats (not to be confused with the Our Gang character) has been shuffled back and forth between polygonum, fallopia, and persicaria. For the sake of continuity, we’re standing pat until both sides quit squabbling and the UN forges a truce. We have selected several garden-worthy forms from a genus which includes several terrorists who have been less than stirling garden citizens.
Polygonum cuspidatum 'Crimson Beauty' (Mexican Bamboo)

Polygonum cuspidatum 'Crimson Beauty' (Mexican Bamboo)

Sun to Part SunZone: 5-9 84" tall Origin: Japan    alternate image
Web-Only! This introduction from the old Gulf Stream Nursery in Accomack Co., VA, was selected both for flower color and clumping habit. This selection does not run and take over the countryside like the horrible weedy species plant that threatens the Northeast. The upright clumps, to 7' on bamboo-like stalks, burst forth with dazzling tassels from late August to late November, first white, then fiery red, then back to white. This is a fabulous perennial for fall color and is also great for drying, which prevents garden seedlings--gotta have it! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #00904

Polygonum cuspidatum 'Freckles' (Freckles Mexican Bamboo)

Polygonum cuspidatum 'Freckles' (Freckles Mexican Bamboo)

Sun to Part SunZone: 5-9 72" tall Origin: Japan    alternate image
We love Polygonum 'Spectabile' but always wanted red flowers with the speckled foliage. Finally, the near-sterile P. 'Spectabile' gave us a few seedlings, and one met our expectations. Polygonum 'Freckles' is a 2004 PDN introduction, which we have trialed since 1993. P. 'Freckles' makes a clump of 6' tall arching bamboo-looking stems. The stems are clothed with heavily white-speckled leaves (much brighter than P. 'Spectabile'). When grown in full sun, the leaves take on a reddish cast. In September, the clumps are topped with terminal and axillary flower stalks of short red spikes...very attractive, and no seedlings or running in 10+ years. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05427

Polygonum cuspidatum 'Spectabile' (Speckled Mexican Bamboo)

Polygonum cuspidatum 'Spectabile' (Speckled Mexican Bamboo)

Sun to Light ShadeZone: 5-9 72" tall Origin: Japan
Web-Only! (aka: Fallopia japonica 'Variegata') This spectacular Mexican bamboo has heart-shaped leaves that are frosted with white freckles. Although this polygonum is called a very slow spreader, ours has remained in a semi-clump (sandy soil). We have also found this selection to be virtually sterile in terms of seed production. The 6' wide clump is topped with feathery white plumes in September and November...a great fall addition! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #00511
