Rhodophiala
Rhodophiala bifida (Oxblood Lily)

Rhodophiala bifida (Oxblood Lily)

Sun to Light ShadeZone: 7-10 12" tall Origin: Argentina
(aka: Hippeastrum advenum) This delightful, easy-to-grow South American amaryllis relative is one of the most outstanding and durable bulbs for southeastern gardens. Multiplying steadily, these small, lycoris-like bulbs remain evergreen through the winter, finally going dormant in late spring. Beginning in late summer or early fall, the 12" stalks arise from nowhere, each topped with a cluster of stunning, carmine-red, horizontally facing, habranthus-like flowers...a superb garden surprise toward the end of the season! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #03014

Rhodophiala bifida var. spathacea (Pink Oxblood Lily)

Rhodophiala bifida var. spathacea (Pink Oxblood Lily)

Sun to Light ShadeZone: 7-10 8" tall Origin: Argentina
Web-Only! Finally, we are able to offer the rare pink-flowered form of the wonderful Argentine oxblood lily. I first saw this growing in the TX garden of plantswoman Margaret Kane many years ago and hunted for years before I was finally able to obtain a single bulb. The mini-hippeastrum-like bright magenta-pink flowers are held atop "nekkid" 8" stems in August/September. After flowering, the lycoris-like basal foliage emerges and persists through the winter. In late spring, the foliage hibernates and it's a matter of wait-and-watch until the flowers emerge again. The pots that we offer contain a huge 1" + flowering-sized bulb. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #04044

Rohdea (Sacred Lily)
One of the most highly prized plants in Japan are the numerous fancy leaf selections of sacred lily, often commanding prices of $1,000 to $10,000 per division. Being slow to multiply (a perpetual failure in tissue culture), accompanied by the extremely high demand from collectors, you can be sure that rohdeas will never be found at the mass merchants. We are sure that when you compare the price of “a night on the town” with the cost of a rohdea (factoring in the duration of enjoyment quotient...indigestion doesn’t count), then you will find that rohdeas are really quite reasonable. Rohdeas are members of the lily family that can best be described as evergreen hostas. In fall, the old 6” flower stalks are adorned with bright red fruit. Easy to grow, they prefer slightly moist-to-dry woodland conditions. We have very old clumps in the garden, growing at the base of black walnut trees...now that is tough! Contrary to gardening books, rohdeas are reliably hardy to Zone 6, and many friends find them satisfactory in Zone 5, although they become deciduous in such temperatures, which certainly slow their growth. We are thrilled to be able to offer what is probably the largest selection of cultivars ever made available in the United States, with more on the way in future listings.
Rohdea japonica (Sacred Lily)

Rohdea japonica (Sacred Lily)

Light Shade to ShadeZone: 6-10 12" tall Origin: Japan
This rare and highly-prized, tropical-looking, oriental native provides the appearance of an evergreen hosta. The 1' long x 2" wide, thick, dark green leaves form an upright vase-shaped clump to 2' wide in 10 years. Late in the season, the insignificant flowers produce short stalks of red berries at the base of the plant. When used in mass, rohdeas are a dynamite evergreen addition to the deep shade garden for a presence even in winter. We have masses of these growing at the base of giant black walnut trees...can you say tough? Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #01088

Rohdea japonica 'Galle' (Narrow Leaf Sacred lily)

Rohdea japonica 'Galle' (Narrow Leaf Sacred lily)

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 6-10 12" tall Origin: Japan
Web-Only! (aka: R. 'Tyokkwina') From the late Fred Galle, via the US National Arboretum (USNA #39665), comes this vigorous cultivar of the evergreen sacred lily. The much narrower than normal, boat-shaped, dark green leaves (18" long x 1" wide) make an arching clump similar to a hosta. As with the species, this rare evergreen perennial makes a great winter interest plant for the woodland...one of the collector plants of great value in Japan. Pot size: 2 qt. (1.892 L) #00603

Rohdea japonica 'Gunjaku' (Sacred Lily)

Rohdea japonica 'Gunjaku' (Sacred Lily)

Light Shade to ShadeZone: 6-10 10" tall Origin: Japan
Web-Only! We are pleased to be able to share another one of the hard-to-find Japanese sacred lily selections. R. 'Gunjaku' is essentially a larger version of R. 'Mure Suzume'. Each thick, evergreen leaf is seemingly frosted with white streaks. When mature, expect a 10" tall x 15" wide clump, topped with short stalks of red berries in winter. R. 'Gunjaku' is perfect for a dry shade site where nothing else will grow. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #02152

Rohdea japonica 'Herbie' (Sacred Lily)

Rohdea japonica 'Herbie' (Sacred Lily)

Light Shade to ShadeZone: 6-10 8" tall Origin: Japan
We obtained this fabulous rohdea from CA, where it was grown in a private Japanese garden for many years. In appearance it is patterned like R. japonica 'Miyako No Jo', with dark green leaves bordered by nice white edges. Instead of being upright like the R. 'Miyako No Jo', this selection makes a much shorter and wider clump. It is also one of the fastest-multiplying rohdeas that we have grown. Just like other rohdea, the clumps are adorned with short stalks of bright red berries in the winter. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #02705

Rohdea japonica 'Nobori Ryu' (Sacred Lily)

Rohdea japonica 'Nobori Ryu' (Sacred Lily)

Light Shade to ShadeZone: 6-10 10" tall Origin: Japan
Web-Only! This amazing and very rare selection of the Japanese sacred lily has the most contortedly (take note...a new plant word) kinky leaves of any of the selections that we grow. The Japanese cultivar name 'Nobori Ryu' means "climbing dragon"...a reference to the dramatically raised ridge that runs down the center of each thick green leaf. In winter, these deep shade-lovers are highlighted for the season with short stalks of brilliant red berries. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #02150

Rohdea japonica 'Suncrest' (Sacred Lily)

Rohdea japonica 'Suncrest' (Sacred Lily)

Light Shade to ShadeZone: 6-10 10" tall Origin: Japan
Web-Only! Always a customer favorite, Rohdea 'Suncrest' forms a rosette of thick, black-green leaves that arch outward. R. 'Suncrest' features the highly sought-after, white, raised "dragon crest" (distorted leaf growth) that runs down the center of each leaf. Established clumps of this easy-to-grow evergreen perennial will be adorned with short stems of bright red berries in winter. Pot size: 2 qt. (1.892 L) #02706

Rohdea japonica 'Talbot Manor' (Sacred Lily)

Rohdea japonica 'Talbot Manor' (Sacred Lily)

Light Shade to ShadeZone: 6-10 10" tall Origin: Japan
Web-Only! This selection of evergreen sacred lily is one that we brought back from a visit to the UK in the early '90s. The dark green leaves appear to have been heavily brushed in a horizontal direction with white paint. Actually it looks like the last home paint job I got when I took the lowest bid. At least in rohdeas, bad paint jobs make the plant worth more. How many do you want? If you have a shady spot near your house, plant them nearby and tell your spouse that you painted the house to match...on purpose. Pot size: 2 qt. (1.892 L) #02149

Rohdea japonica 'Washitakakuma' (Sacred Lily)

Rohdea japonica 'Washitakakuma' (Sacred Lily)

Light Shade to ShadeZone: 6-10 18" tall Origin: Japan
Web-Only! This is a splendid and very rare Japanese selection of the deep shade-loving sacred lily. The wide green foliage is highlighted by very large, pure white bands that often cover the entire leaf except for the dark green tips and leaf bases. The color patterning is strongest on the new foliage that emerges in June and July. In fall, the clumps are adorned by short stalks of large red berries. Pot size: 2 qt. (1.892 L) #03017

Rohdea japonica 'Yattazu Yan Jaku' (Sacred Lily)

Rohdea japonica 'Yattazu Yan Jaku' (Sacred Lily)

Light Shade to ShadeZone: 6-10 18" tall Origin: Japan
Web-Only! R. 'Yattazu Yan Jaku' is one of the most emotion-provoking rohdeas that we grow...folks either love it or hate it. This upright-growing, evergreen clumper has glossy green leaves that are splashed with giant blotches of creamy white, as though you stuck a green rohdea in a spin art machine. Toward the end of the leaves, the blotches are larger. In late fall, the clumps are highlighted by 3" tall stalks of red berries...truly stunning! Pot size: 2 qt. (1.892 L) #02146
