Salvia (Sage)
What a great bunch of plants! Thanks to the efforts of Richard Dufresne of Greensboro, NC, and John Fairey and Carl Schoenfeld of Yucca Do Nursery of Waller, TX, salvias have taken a remarkable turn for the better. We will bring you the latest and the best of new perennial salvias, many from the southwest US and mountain regions of Mexico. If you think of salvias as little red things in your annual beds...think again. Salvias as a group prefer full bright sun and well-drained soils. On many of the marginally hardy salvias, we recommend that they not be cut back until early spring, since water will fill cut branches and freeze during the winter. |
Salvia penstemonoides (Giant Red Sage)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 6-9 36" tall Origin: USA
Web-Only!
This Federally Endangered native from the Edwards Plateau in central TX was presumed extinct until five small populations were rediscovered. We are pleased to offer seed-grown plants of this rare but easy-to-grow gem. In appearance, the shiny green basal leaves resemble a penstemon, as do the cherry-red flowers atop 3' stalks (occasionally reaching 5') that top the clump from June through September. In the wild, it occurs in well-drained moist seeps. In the garden, we have found that a full-sun, well-drained but occasionally moist site is the perfect home to this long-lived sage. Because of its endangered status, we are unable to ship these outside NC...another reason to visit us on our Open House Days. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #04899

Salvia 'Phyllis Fancy' (Phyllis Fancy Sage)
Sun Zone: 7b-9 84" tall Origin: Hybrid
Web-Only!
I never expected to have a salvia that shaded out buddleias, but such is the case with Salvia 'Phyllis Fancy'. Named for Phyllis Norris, this wonderful seedling, thought to be a hybrid between Salvia leucantha and possibly S. chiapensis, occurred at the University of California Santa Cruz Arboretum. It is similar but larger and hardier than S. 'Waverly' and has been perennial to 8 degrees F in our trials. The 7' tall clumps are only 1' wide at the bottom but have a 7' wide spread at the top...like a barrel-chested man with tiny feet. Starting in early September and continuing until frost, the clumps are topped with 1' long purple spikes of light lavender flowers, each held in a bicolor calyx, purple on top and green on the bottom...a dramatic garden specimen!

Salvia 'Pink Delight' PP 14,965 (Pink Meadow Sage)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 5-8 24" tall Origin: Europe
Web-Only!
We have been thrilled with this new 2000 salvia introduction from world famous designer Piet Oudolf of the Netherlands. This hybrid of cultivar Salvia 'Amethyst' and Salvia 'Tanzerin' has both S. pratensis and S. nemorosa in its background. S. 'Pink Delight' forms 18" wide basal rosettes of large, green leaves, which give rise to 2' tall spikes of pink starting in late spring. Cut back the old flower stalks for re-flowering. Dry or slightly moist conditions seem fine for this hybrid. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05241

Salvia puberula 'El Butano' (El Butano Mexican Sage)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 7b-9, at least 48" tall Origin: Mexico
Web-Only!
This selection of S. puberula (with particularly large and colorful flowers) was collected by John Fairey and Carl Schoenfeld of Yucca Do in Nuevo Leon, Mexico, at 7000' in elevation. The velvety green leaves adorn the 4' tall upright stalks that are topped, starting in late October, with a flower head of deep, magenta-pink flowers resembling a pink cotton ball that was plugged into an electrical outlet...a great form of this wonderful salvia. We have had this for over a decade and have never had any winter losses in Zone 7b. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #01543

Salvia 'Purple Majesty' (Purple Majesty Sage)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 7b-10, at least 48" tall Origin: Hybrid
Web-Only!
Salvia 'Purple Majesty' is the result of a cross by California's Fred Boutin of S. guaranitica and S. gesneriiflora 'Tequila', that was introduced by the Huntington Gardens around 1980. This tough-as-nails salvia makes a wonderful garden specimen, combining the best features of the floriferous S. guaranitica and the clumping S. gesneraeflora. Starting in mid-summer and continuing until fall, the 4' tall clumps burst into flower with 10" terminal spikes of dark blue-purple. S. 'Purple Majesty' has shown good winter hardiness here, surviving extended periods at or slightly below 0 degrees F. Rich soil provides for the best performance...but then, don't we all perform best when rich? Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #01232

Salvia regla 'Jame' (Orange Mountain Sage)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 7b-10, possibly colder 40" tall Origin: Mexico
Web-Only!
This Dr. Rich Dufresne collection from Coahuila, Jame, Mexico, is a star in southern gardens. The glossy green, round foliage adorns this upright-growing woody salvia to nearly 4' tall. In early fall (October for us), the cultivar is adorned with 3" long scarlet-orange, tubular flowers...a hummingbird's version of winning the Powerball lottery. S. regla is quite unique in the world of hardy salvias! Further south, S. regla could reach 10' tall...gasp! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #01626

Salvia reptans West Texas Form (Cobalt Sage)
Sun Zone: 6-9 36" tall Origin: USA, Mexico    alternate image
Web-Only!
(aka: S. leptophylla) Guess what?...another truly fabulous native salvia that seems to have completely missed cultivation! This easy-to-grow TX native is a close relative of S. pitcheri, but, in my opinion, is a much nicer plant. Normally a lax plant, this upright form was collected by Pat McNeal of TX in the Davis Mountains in Davis Co., TX, at 4000'. The needle-thin, green leaves adorn the 3' tall stems, and in September it bursts forth at the tips with vivid, dark cobalt-blue flowers. Native to the Trans-Pecos region, it is found in dry, gravelly, mountainous washes. Despite this affinity for well-drained soils, it has performed marvelously in the muggy Southeast. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #03732

Salvia 'Rhapsody In Blue' PP 15,148 (Rhapsody in Blue Sage)
Sun Zone: 5-8, at least 22" tall Origin: Hybrid
NEW!
Salvia 'Rhapsody in Blue', the blue-flowered equivalent of Salvia 'Eveline', is another great new sage from one of Holland's premier plantsman, Piet Oudolf. This Salvia nemorosa 'Amethyst' hybrid forms a compact deciduous clump of dark green leaves, topped by up to 36 flower spikes. The 22" tall spikes are clothed with blue-purple flowers (RHS 93A) from mid-April into June. An open location with good air movement and good soil drainage grows the best plants. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08054

Salvia roemeriana (Roemer's Sage)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 7-10 10" tall Origin: USA, Mexico
Web-Only!
This charming and very easy-to-grow sage is the little darling of the salvia world. I first caught a glimpse of S. roemeriana on my expedition to Mexico in 1994. This perennial salvia makes a short rosette of dark green leaves with purple veins. In spring it flowers heavily, topped with 12" spikes of bright crimson-red, tubular flowers...great for low-flying hummingbirds. It has survived 0 degrees F here with no problem and actually reseeds near the original clump. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #02326

Salvia 'Scarlet Spires' (Scarlet Spires Sage)
Sun Zone: 7b-9, at least 36" tall Origin: Hybrid
NEW!
This new salvia comes from David Salman at High Country Gardens, who discovered this seedling of S. darcyi x S. 'Raspberry Delight' in his garden. This rapid grower makes a huge 3' tall x 6' wide clump of upright stems in one season, clothed in nose-clearingly fragrant, small deltoid-shaped, light green leaves. The clumps are topped from early summer until fall with a stunning, unrelenting floral display of brick-red (RHS 42A) flowers. The flower color is one shade lighter than the parent S. darcyi and several shades darker than its cousin, S. 'Silke's Dream'. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08062

Salvia 'Silke's Dream' (Silke's Dream Sage)
Sun Zone: 7-10, possibly colder 24" tall Origin: Hybrid    alternate image
Web-Only!
We are always on the lookout for good new garden sages, and this is the best we have seen recently. This cross of S. darcyi x S. microphylla was discovered by Art Petly of Austin, TX. Looking superficially like S. microphylla, the 3' wide clump is topped all summer with 15" spikes of rich, dark orange-red (RHS 42A). In the fall, the number of flowers explode into a solid mass of color. This is a particularly durable and easy-to-grow sage that is destined for stardom. Thanks to Scott Ogden for sharing this exciting salvia hybrid that we admired in his TX garden during a 2000 visit. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #04442
