This unusual 2004 introduction is a selection of the amazing TX native Gaillardia aestivalis made by Dawn Stover of the SFA Mast Arboretum in Nacogdoches, TX. Instead of the typical gaillardia flowers, G. 'Grape Sensation' is topped with 2" wide grape flowers from May through October. Having derived from G. aestivalis var. winkleri, G. Gaillardia aristata 'Fanfare' PP 15,892 (Fanfare Blanketflower)

Discovered by Richard Reed in the UK, this hot gaillardia is ready to take the perennial world by storm. I don't usually get excited by gaillardias, but I'll never forget the first time I laid eyes on this beauty...my wife slapped me (just kidding). The compact, 15" tall x 12" wide, well-branched mound is topped from June to August with the most incredible flowers. Each upturned 3" wide flower head looks as if miniature honeysuckle flowers are attached to a central cone. Each floret is red at the base, changing to bright yellow at the flared tips. Wow! This 2008 release from John Dixon of Washington's Skagit Gardens is an amazingly vigorous blanketflower forming a 18" tall x 3'+ wide clump. It is topped starting in late April with 3.5" wide bright orange flowers with widely fluted tips surrounding a russet-brown cone. The flower shape is like G. This purple-flowered selection of the South African native (SW Cape to East Cape) G. incanum makes a wonderful textural foil in the summer garden. This true geranium, not to be confused with pelargoniums, makes an open mound to 3' wide of very airy, finely-cut green leaves, which are topped starting in late spring and sporadically through summer with large, lavender purple, saucer-like flowers. If you like Geranium 'Brookside', then you will love Geranium 'Orion'. This hybrid from Holland's Brian Kabbes is the result of a cross between G. himalayense 'Gravetye' and G. 'Brookside'. The result is a non-flopping, heat- and humidity-tolerant clump of deeply cut, green foliage that can reach 30" tall x 3' wide, topped in spring with large, 2.5" intensely blue flowers. If you think Geranium 'Rozanne' and G. 'Jolly Bee' are great, you'll love this purple-flowered form (RHS 80A). The name must be another example of male color-blindness. Netherlands nurseryman Marco van Noort found this mutation in his plants of G. 'Jolly Bee' and subsequently named it G. 'Pink Penny'. Just like its parent, G. 'Pink Penny' makes an 15" tall x 18" wide mound of white-patterned green foliage that is topped from June until frost with 2.5" wide purple flowers, each highlighted with dramatic dark veining. Here's another new Geranium wallichianum hybrid we got for trialing and are only releasing in limited quantities at this time. Geranium 'Rosetta' is touted as a pink version of the popular G. 'Jolly Bee'...although it sure looks lavender to me, albeit with a nice white eye zone. The growth form is a sprawling clump to 2' wide, similar to G. 'Jolly Bee'.

This amazing new selection of hardy geranium from Holland's Coen Jansen boasts large, intensely pink flowers, each highlighted by red markings radiating from the center of the flower. Starting in late spring and continuing most of the summer, the compact 14" tall mound of dark-green cutleaf foliage is covered in flowers. We have found this to be a really great color break in Geranium sanguineum. For tough, dry, sunny areas, this is the perfect solution. Coen named the geranium for his street, "Ankummer Es."
