Hosta (Hosta)
These natives, mostly to prairies (some in woods) of China, Japan, and Korea, have been grown in America for over 150 years. Currently, there are nearly 5,000 cultivars available in the trade. Of these, probably 500 actually are distinct and garden-worthy. During the last few years, the quality and quantity of new hosta introductions has risen substantially. We continually work with the country's best breeders to evaluate new introductions, and we choose to sell only those we feel represent the very best. For the best performance, hostas prefer light shade to a couple of hours of sun in the morning. The further south you move, the more moisture will be required to grow the size hostas that are prevalent in the North. Good soil preparation is also a key to growing a hosta well. Our plants are all container-grown and are usually multiple-division plants...our price is for an entire container of 1-20 divisions. We do not offer small, recently propagated plants and challenge other nurserymen to do the same. We know you will be pleased with our quality; we hope you will also be pleased with our selection and prices. When hostas are divided under nursery conditions, they often take on immature leaf characteristics including more pointed leaves as well as reduced cupping and corrugation. These leaf forms that are pictured and described will re-develop in one to two growing seasons...don’t be alarmed.

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 3-8, at least 8" tall Origin: Hybrid
What a beauty! This unusual sport of H. 'Hanky Panky' has drawn lots of attention in our garden...unfortunately, it has been a miserable failure in tissue culture. We've been busy dividing from the original and are finally able to offer a few for this season. The 8" tall x 22" wide, small to medium sized clump is composed of creamy white leaves, each highlighted by a very narrow, medium green central pattern, which is in turn surrounded by random white threadlike streaks. The clumps, whose edge color changes from white to creamy yellow by mid-summer, are topped with 20" spikes of light lavender flowers in late June. Pot size: 2 qt. (1.892 L) #06591

Hosta 'Christmas Candy' PPAF, PVR (Gert van Eijk-Bos 02)

Hosta 'Christmas Candy' PPAF, PVR (Gert van Eijk-Bos 02)

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 3-8 18" tall Origin: Hybrid
Web-Only! This new introduction from Holland is reportedly a mutation from one of our favorite hostas, H. 'Night before Christmas'. In appearance, it looks similar to "NBC," except that the clump is slightly smaller, and the leaf edges are a darker green. The most important difference, however, is that the solid white center does not fade all growing season. H. 'Christmas Candy' is amazingly sun-tolerant as long as the soil is moist. At maturity, expect a 24" wide clump of bright creamy white leaves surrounded by a dark green border...very dramatic. In midsummer, the clumps are topped with light lavender H. 'Fortunei'-type flowers. Pot size: 3 qt. (2.83 L) #05746

Light ShadeZone: 3-8 20" tall Origin: Hybrid
Web-Only! We like hostas that shout at you from across the garden, and Hosta 'Christmas Pageant' is a real screamer. This incredible sport of H. 'Christmas Tree' makes a 2' wide clump of round, corrugated, dark green leaves. Each leaf is surrounded by a border that will be more than 1" wide at maturity. The leaf edge emerges a creamy yellow in spring and turns nearly pure white by summer. In late spring, the clumps are topped with spikes of light lavender flowers. Pot size: 3 qt. (2.83 L) #05418

Part Sun to Light ShadeZone: 3-8 18" tall Origin: Hybrid
Web-Only! (aka: H. 'Forest Fire') This 2000 introduction from Michigan's John Clifford is another sport of Hosta 'Sagae'. H. 'Clifford's Forest Fire' makes an 18" tall x 18" wide plant that looks for all the world like Hosta 'Liberty', but the patent application states that the leaf edges while being wider than H. 'Sagae' are not as wide as H. 'Liberty'. Pot size: 2 qt. (1.892 L) #06344

Web-Only! This new Gil Jones introduction is a sport of the dramatic H. 'High Noon'. Instead of having all-gold leaves, however, H. 'Climax' has heavily-corrugated green leaves, each with a 1" wide golden border. Each large 4'+ clump has the same vase-shaped habit of H. 'High Noon'. In late spring, this specimen hosta is topped with 32" scapes of light lavender flowers...a superb specimen plant! Pot size: 3 qt. (2.83 L) #04207

Light ShadeZone: 3-9 9" tall Origin: Hybrid
Web-Only! This unusual Bob Solberg hybrid carries the contorted leaf tradition of H. 'Praying Hands' to a new extreme...arthritic hands. Bob's cross of H. 'Tortifrons' x H. 'One Man's Treasure' makes a 22" wide clump of very glossy, narrow green leaves that are fused and twisted near the tip like a Hosta 'Tortifrons' on steroids. The architecturally fascinating clumps are topped with 20" flower scapes with lavender flowers in mid-September (NC). Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #06907
