More Information About Romneya
The genus Romneya is very small, containing just two species of California endemics, Romneya coulteri and Romneya trichocalyx. Romneya is in the same plant family as poppies which becomes obvious in the summer when the plants produce their large, papery-petalled white flowers.
Romneya (California Poppy) Growing Conditions
On the West Coast, California poppy can be invasive and hard to remove. But the opposite is true in the Southeast where our heavy clay soils and humid weather make romneya very difficult to establish. After 15 tries (yes, we are that tenacious), we finally found the secret...well-drained soil, full sun, and no water in the winter months. There is a fine line between over-watering and under-watering during its establishing phase. Don't let the soil dry out but don't let it stay moist either. However, once established, romneya is quite tough and will spread via underground rhizomes.
